Ladytron, Weebl and Bob and the BIMA blog

More shameless self-promotion from me.

I have just started guest-blogging at the BIMA blog. My first post is about the music industry again after an unfortunate incident involving Ladytron, Ladytron’s management, Weebl and bob and an excellent (now officially removed  from the Weebl and Bob site) piss-take video of Destroy – a great song.

I promise not to double post (however hard that may be)  – I hope you enjoy it.

Ps if you are interested in the original weebl and bob animation it is of course still in existence unofficially and without the input of the lovely folks at Weebl and Bob, here http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SaSU6Jrs22E. It’s the internet stupid.

NMK article

My latest article has just been published on NMK talking about how as digital professionals we need to genuinely consider cross-platform and not isolate oursleves in a digital ghetto. If we do one of two things will happen – we will miss out on delivering projects for clients who increasingly see no boundaries between physical and digital experiences and we will therefore miss out on doing some really interesting stuff.

You can read more at http://www.nmk.co.uk/article/2008/9/12/media-landscape-vs-media-ghetto.

Blip me baby one more time

screengrab of my blip profile

A wise man once said “Talent imitates, genius steals”. I would argue that Blip.fm is the latter. It takes the best functions of Twitter lock, stockand barrel but adds an all important instinctiveness. Instead of asking “What are you doing now?” it asks “What are you listening to now?” and then lets you listen to that track. Simple twist. Genius result.

It speaks to a different audience than Twitter, though they undoubtedly cross-over. There are people who genuinely connect through music in a way that others connect through words or touch. A shared love of a track can bond people. This is what distinguishes Blip.fm. It enables otherwise random social connections in a way that genuinely touches its advocates. I would feel far more relaxed giving a stranger “props” because I love the fact that they have just posted a track by the Yeah,Yeah,Yeahs than I would sending a message to someone I don’t know because I liked the post they just made. For me music is a public domain object that can be commented on, a twitter message is a private domain object in a public space that I am less likely to respond to unless it is directed @me.

Neither of these responses are wrong, they just demonstrate that the same functionality can be used to speak to entirely different mind sets with simple changes. And that is the beauty that web 2.0 offers us.

Check out my marvellous taste at http://blip.fm/watusi and join up so I can enjoy your music too!

Back to school

Taking a brief break from blip.fm I was musing on the time of year, everyone rushing back to school or University and my thoughts turned to learning. I’m lucky enough to be actively encouraged to engage in CPD through my company’s involvement in the IPA so attending conferences is a pleasure I don’t need to feel guilty about. There are a couple of interesting ones coming up.

Next week is i-design in London a comprehensive one-dayer on the full gamut of interactive design and you can get a portfolio briefing from some of Imagination’s lead designers, including Tony Phillips, who worked as a Lead Creative at Deep End back in the day, and one of our resourcing gurus.

Then in October up in Birmingham is Hello Digital Media at which the infamous Zeroinfluencer aka David Bausola will be talking about Where Are The Joneses? the community comedy project that Imagination produced for Ford and that brought together comedy and social networks last summer.

Then of course there is the Webby Conference in the States which I know will be amazing but I am not sure I can manage to get out there. So I will have to console myself with TED instead.
